Another component of our growing understanding of the Doom was the fantastic research carried out by local volunteer John Frankland. John worked tirelessly to uncover the secrets of our Doom painting; researching, cross-examining references and even visiting other surviving examples across the country.
What resulted was a fascinating illustrated exhibition providing insight into the social and historical context of such works of art, the meaning behind the symbolism, the methods used to conserve our Doom and the broader scope of Medieval wall painting in UK churches.
The exhibition has currently finished showing at St Mary’s but if you wish to loan the 8 panel exhibition or book a talk about the painting reconstruction and the exhibition with artist Steve Lawes, please contact the Heritage Hub Team.
