Our season of all things Medieval ended with a fascinating art history talk by Medieval wall paintings expert Dr Miriam Gill.
Dr Gill is an experienced Adult Education lecturer, teaching at Oxford Leicester, and the WEA. Her expertise had already been key in informing Steve’s decisions around our painting reconstruction and on 28th May 2024, we were able to witness her intriguing insights for ourselves.
The audience were treated to a visual feast of Medieval wall paintings in different styles and a carefully explained understanding of the social conditions in which such paintings were produced during Dr Gill’s illustrated lecture; from the fashions and traditions that would have informed the creation of such paintings, to the array of visual clues provided by our own original ‘Doom’ painting and the high quality and vibrancy it would have presented to assembled congregations of the early 1400s.
